The heat path is drawn
The existing and proposed route should be understandable from the documents. Identify which connections and equipment change, which remain, and which party confirms the suitability of each interface before procurement.
CRITICAL COOLING FIELD GUIDE
An economizer uses suitable outdoor conditions to reduce mechanical cooling work. The practical choice depends on the installed cooling path, environmental requirements and the changes the building can support.
For NYC and Northern NJ facilities. Share the equipment and decision you need help with; the mechanical scope is confirmed for your site.
AT A GLANCE
Air-side, water-side and refrigerant economizer arrangements use different heat-transfer paths and equipment. A feasibility review should identify the proposed architecture, the conditions when it can contribute, the remaining mechanical cooling role and the operating transition between modes. The term free cooling does not mean zero energy use, automatic compatibility or a guaranteed saving at a particular site.

| Concept | Basic heat-transfer path | Early feasibility question |
|---|---|---|
| Air-side | Controlled outdoor air contributes cooling | Can the building support the required air path and environmental controls? |
| Water-side | A suitable water-system arrangement transfers heat | Are the required water conditions and interfaces available? |
| Refrigerant | A compatible refrigerant-system arrangement contributes cooling | Is this an approved configuration for the selected equipment? |
| All options | Mechanical cooling may still be needed | How are transitions, maintenance and comparison data defined? |
START WITH THE DECISION
A comparison becomes reviewable when these answers are explicit.
The existing and proposed route should be understandable from the documents. Identify which connections and equipment change, which remain, and which party confirms the suitability of each interface before procurement.
Ask for the duty, weather, operating criteria and equipment inputs behind the expected contribution. Label preliminary assumptions. A savings percentage without those inputs is difficult to verify or apply to a specific facility.
Assign the sequence, controls review, acceptance evidence and maintenance documentation. A technically possible concept still needs a practical plan for installation and operation by the team that will inherit it.
An air-side approach uses outdoor air under controlled conditions. A water-side approach transfers heat through the water-system arrangement when conditions permit. Some systems use a refrigerant economizer configuration. These concepts are not interchangeable accessories. A reviewer needs the installed system drawings and equipment details to establish which, if any, can form a practical project at the facility.
Ask the proposal to describe what changes physically and what remains in service. For example, a project involving a new outdoor-air path raises different space, filtration and building questions from a project modifying a water-system interface. Keep an attractive product description separate from a confirmed installation option. The owner should understand the proposed route without having to infer it from the label economizer or a manufacturer’s projected savings figure.
A useful opportunity estimate links the site’s cooling duty with the conditions under which the proposed mode can operate. Annual weather data alone does not establish useful economizer operation, and the number of hours a room is occupied does not describe the heat generated by continuously operating IT. Ask which inputs were measured, supplied by the owner or assumed for the preliminary analysis.
The review should also explain partial contribution. An option may assist cooling during some conditions without taking over the entire duty. A clear estimate distinguishes full and partial operation and identifies the equipment that still consumes energy. Keep the assumptions visible so a change to the IT load, operating criterion or installed plant does not leave an outdated estimate circulating as a promised project result.
The site needs a defined operating sequence for transitions between economizer and mechanical cooling modes. That sequence should be developed and reviewed by the responsible design and controls parties. The owner’s planning task is to ensure those responsibilities and acceptance criteria appear in the scope, rather than assuming the equipment will coordinate itself after installation. This guide is not a sequence of operations or a control-programming procedure.
Ask how maintenance affects each proposed mode and what the owner will know when a mode is unavailable. The project may introduce additional components or tasks even if it reduces some compressor operation. Include those obligations in the comparison. A proposal that discusses only an annual energy total can conceal practical differences in access, service capability and the effort required to keep the installed arrangement usable.
The baseline should describe the current system’s actual condition and duty. Repairing an existing fault and adding an economizer are different interventions; combining their effects without explanation makes the value of each difficult to judge. The comparison should also include enabling work, controls, access, maintenance and any specialist design or acceptance scope. List exclusions rather than leaving the owner to discover them during construction.
For an occupied NYC or Northern NJ property, obtain building input early where new air paths, outdoor equipment or shared systems are involved. The resulting feasibility decision may be to proceed, gather more evidence or retain the present arrangement. Each can be useful if the reasons are clear. Airplex can discuss the facility mechanical scope; detailed engineering, controls integration and any efficiency guarantee require explicit, separately confirmed terms.
COMMON QUESTIONS
No. The term describes reducing or avoiding some mechanical refrigeration under suitable conditions. Fans, pumps, controls or other equipment may still operate, and the project has installation and maintenance costs. Ask the proposer to identify the energy boundary and operating assumptions. An equipment feature called free cooling should not be interpreted as a zero-cost operating mode.
No. Suitability depends on the existing water system, required conditions, available interfaces and project constraints. The site needs a defined engineering review rather than a generic accessory recommendation. A preliminary discussion can identify possible paths, but the proposal should separate a feasible connection from an unverified assumption and include the supporting work required to make that path usable.
No. A deliberate outdoor-air cooling arrangement involves controlled air paths and an assessment of environmental and building requirements. Opening a window or door does not reproduce that system. This guide does not authorize a ventilation or controls change. Use the approved operating arrangement until qualified reviewers have defined and accepted any proposed project.
That requires a site-specific estimate using applicable weather conditions, equipment performance, cooling duty and operating criteria. This page does not supply a regional hours or savings promise. Request the data sources and assumptions behind any forecast, including partial operation and the mechanical equipment that continues to run. Revisit the estimate if the design basis changes.
They share the broad idea of using favorable conditions, but their equipment, operating requirements and system boundaries can be very different. An office rooftop-unit repair should not be used as proof of capability for a critical-cooling retrofit. Identify the actual architecture and tasks so the appropriate mechanical, design and controls participants can be confirmed.
It should explain whether an identified option is workable, what information remains missing and how its full scope compares with the current arrangement. Useful outputs include the project boundary, assumptions, expected operating contribution and required specialist roles. A list of product advantages without site dependencies is not enough to approve procurement or promise an operating result.
