Commercial Air Curtain Service in NYC & Northern NJ

An air curtain needs to suit the opening and operate when the doorway is in use. Airplex helps retail, warehouse and commercial property teams investigate air-curtain problems and compare repair, maintenance and installation options for their entrances.

Share the equipment and affected spaces. Service fit, access and availability are confirmed for each request.

AT A GLANCE

Match the air stream to the doorway and operating conditions

An air curtain directs a moving stream of air across an opening to help separate indoor and outdoor conditions while the door is open. Its performance depends on the equipment, opening, installation and surroundings. It does not replace the building’s required ventilation, and a running fan does not prove that the doorway is adequately covered.

UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM

Describe what fails at the opening

The complaint may involve the unit, its controls or the surrounding building.

YOUR SERVICE OPTIONS

Plan the appropriate air-curtain work

Selection, mechanical service and control changes should remain visible in the proposal.

Use the full opening, not the door leaf, as the starting point

The area needing coverage is the open passage through which air can move. Door geometry, adjacent openings and the available mounting location affect that application. Berner’s selection guidance considers opening dimensions and use, demonstrating why an equipment choice cannot be made from a photograph of the existing cabinet alone.

Give the installer the actual opening arrangement and explain how it is used. A customer entrance that cycles briefly differs from a loading opening held for deliveries. If future door or storefront changes are planned, include them before selecting equipment. The proposal should identify the condition it was designed around so later alterations do not silently change the project assumptions.

An air curtain is not a cure for every draft

Air movement through a doorway can also reflect wind, other open doors and how building supply and exhaust systems interact. An air curtain creates a directed stream, but it does not make those surrounding conditions disappear. A persistent entrance complaint may therefore require review of the wider building air arrangement as well as the doorway unit.

Describe when the draft is strongest and whether it changes with kitchen exhaust, loading activity or other equipment. Those observations help coordinate the appropriate investigation; they do not establish a ventilation defect on their own. If make-up air or balancing work is indicated, the scope should name it separately rather than promising that an air-curtain change will resolve every building-pressure concern.

Agree how door operation and heating should work together

An air curtain may be unheated or use a model-specific heating arrangement. It may operate from a local control, door switch or building system. The intended behavior should be recorded before troubleshooting: when it starts, how long it runs and which controls are responsible. That provides a reference for evaluating complaints and the completed repair.

In a hypothetical storefront, staff may report that the curtain never stops even after the doors close. The question is whether that differs from the approved sequence and, if so, why. Do not assume that continuous operation proves a failed switch. Review the controller and connected devices, then document any approved setting or component change for the next service visit.

Judge the installation at the doorway

Handover should include the equipment identity, attachment and control checks in the agreed scope, plus any remaining limitation at the opening. Record whether the intended door response was observed and whether the air stream is obstructed by finishes or nearby objects. Inspection of overhead mounting or electrical work belongs to qualified personnel.

Claims about energy savings, pest exclusion or substituting for other building features need their own application evidence and approvals. They should not be assumed from an ordinary repair or replacement. For the owner, the immediate useful result is a documented, supported installation with clear operating instructions and maintenance access, along with any wider building issue that still needs attention.

PLANNING THE WORK

What belongs in the project price?

The model, heating arrangement, mounting access and control interface affect cost. Installation estimates should include electrical or structural responsibilities and any access equipment. List door-system work and building-ventilation changes separately so the owner can compare the actual doorway scope.

IN YOUR BUILDING

Plan the work around the occupied building

For NYC and Northern NJ stores and loading areas, plan overhead work around safe entrance access and deliveries. Confirm whether an opening can be taken out of service and who coordinates the door provider. Busy public entrances may require a different work window from back-of-house doors.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Commercial Air Curtain Service questions

Does an air curtain replace make-up air?

No. Make-up air replaces air removed by exhaust or another building process; an air curtain manages an opening with a directed air stream. If a draft reflects an unbalanced building air system, that concern may require separate ventilation work. The two systems should be assessed for their different jobs.

Can an air curtain stop every cold draft?

No universal result can be promised. Opening geometry, mounting, wind, traffic and building conditions all matter. The assessment should define the intended application and any limitations before recommending repair or replacement. A continuing draft may warrant a broader building-air review.

Should I choose a heated air curtain?

That depends on the doorway application, desired comfort and available services. Heating changes the equipment and installation requirements; it does not remove the need for suitable coverage and mounting. Discuss the actual opening and operating pattern before treating heated equipment as a standard upgrade.

Why does the air curtain run when the door is closed?

Its installed control sequence may allow that behavior, or a control issue may exist. Record what the unit does and which controller is installed. The technician should compare the observed operation with the intended sequence before deciding that a door switch, timer or other component has failed.

Does air-curtain maintenance include the automatic door?

Not automatically. The door operator, switch interface and air curtain may have different providers. Identify who maintains each part and who can authorize interface changes. The service proposal should describe any coordination needed without representing unrelated door-system work as included.

What is needed for an installation estimate?

Provide opening dimensions, door-use pattern, existing unit details if any, mounting photographs from floor level and available electrical information. Add access restrictions and planned entrance changes. The installer still needs to confirm the application and attachment method before a final scope can be accepted.
